What are Benzodiazepines? Benzodiazepines, or ‘benzos’ are a family of sedative/hypnotic drugs that have anxiety-reducing effects. They are also prescribed for muscle relaxation, seizures, and sleep. Why are benzodiazepines sometimes unsafe? When taken for a month or less, benzos are relatively safe. When taken for longer periods of time, people can develop a psychological and physiological dependence on benzos. That is, benzos are addictive and may become difficult to stop. There are side-effects from prolonged use. Always seek help from a physician if you seek to discontinue medication; withdrawal should be medically supervised. AT NOE: We utilize evidence based clinical methods to increase the client’s skills to reduce anxiety and panic. These cognitive-behavioral skills are learned and practiced within a group and individual treatment format. The assigned clinician and psychiatric consultant will coordinate with the client’s family doctor. |
